METRO RTA, Federal and Local Officials Celebrate Groundbreaking Ceremony for Federally Funded Maintenance and Operations Facility in Akron METRO RTA was joined by Senator Sherrod Brown, Congresswoman Emilia Sykes, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, City of Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) President & CEO Paul Skoutelas, and METRO Board of Trustees President Robert DeJournett November 20 to celebrate the groundbreaking of METRO’s new Maintenance and Operations Facility. Prior to the ceremonial groundbreaking, Dr. LaDonna BlueEye was welcomed to the stage to recite an Indigenous Land Acknowledgement.

METRO was awarded a Bus and Bus Facilities grant by the FTA in June 2023 totaling $37,808,113. This investment was made possible through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems, investing more than $13 billion annually to support and expand public transit services.

“This new facility means METRO RTA will be able to not only fix buses faster, but ensure that fewer buses break down in the first place. That means better service for Akronites,” said Brown. “Transit like METRO RTA is ultimately about the dignity of work. It creates jobs, it connects people with jobs, and it attracts jobs.”

The purpose of this project is to support current and future operational needs by providing adequate facilities to maintain a state of good repair and improve efficiencies for METRO’s maintenance and operational functions.

The building will consist of a 107,138 square feet steel-framed structure consisting of two main functional areas for operations and vehicle maintenance, a new visitor parking lot, a reconfigured employee parking lot, and a Commercial Drivers’ License training pad. It will be built on METRO-owned property at 336 Kenmore Blvd., immediately adjacent to METRO’s existing facilities at 416 Kenmore Blvd.

“METRO is beyond excited to be awarded just over 37 million from the infrastructure law to build a facility that will serve Summit County residents with sustainable transit for years to come,” said METRO RTA Chief Operations Officer Jarrod Hampshire. “This wouldn’t have been possible without the support from Senator Brown.”

Construction of the project is estimated to run through 2024 with operations beginning in the new facility in 2025.

METRO RTA Exploring Bus Rapid Transit Options METRO RTA, along with local city and county partners, is working to identify a designated corridor for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service. Once a corridor is identified and funding is secured, Greater Akron could see a BRT investment that improves the transit experience, spurs economic development, and enhances quality of life.

BRT is an advanced, high-quality transit system that delivers safe, fast, and comfortable service. Improvements may include enhanced stations including lighting, raised platforms, off board fare collections and real-time information, transit signal priority, and high-frequency service. BRT will improve access to jobs and services, and address regional growth and opportunity barriers in our community. The convenience of BRT will drive sustainable economic growth patterns close to transit and avoid the commons causes of bus delay, such as being stuck in traffic and passengers waiting to pay on board.

“An advisory committee has been in place for approximately 18 months to explore options with METRO team members, stakeholders, city and county leaders, and municipalities,” said Valerie Shea, Director of Planning and Strategic Development. “METRO partners are working diligently to develop alternatives that support the community’s desire for enhanced transit options, while keeping in mind the economic climate. Funding considerations are a top priority and collaboration is needed to bring this investment to life. METRO is grateful to have exceptional partnerships across the community that are as determined to provide fair and equitable transportation to all.”

METRO invites members of the public to attend a “Brews, Bites, and Bus Rapid Transit” meeting to learn more about BRT on Wednesday, November 1. The event will take place at Akronym Brewing, 58 E. Market St., Akron, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Snacks will be provided. Additional meetings will be held at the Robert K. Pfaff Transit Center on Monday, November 6 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and Thursday, November 9 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Additional information about Bus Rapid Transit can be found at yourmetrobus.org/BRT.

Fall 2023 Updates- Route Updates, New Routes, and Fare Capping!

METRO RTA “reimagined” its bus network in June of 2023. METRO has made slight changes to routes for the fall and has introduced two new route options for travelers in the region. METRO has also integrated fare capping via the EZfare app, a way to save its passengers money.

Routes 15, 16, 31, and 32 will change slightly beginning Sunday, August 20, to better service riders and create a more efficient service. Route 15 will operate via Inman St., Triplett Blvd., Hammel St., and Wilbeth Rd. in both directions. Route 16 will operate via Euclid Ave., Moon St., and Vernon Odom Blvd. in the outbound direction. Routes 31 & 32 will operate via Front St., Bailey Rd., 2nd St., and Hudson Dr. in both directions. Riders can access route updates and schedules at yourmetrobus.org.

Along with the fall schedule change on August 20, METRO will reintroduce the Grocery Bus, a community service that was discontinued in 2020 due to the pandemic. The Grocery Bus will service 30 different apartment buildings, taking residents and public riders alike to Acmes, Giant Eagles, Marcs’, and Dave’s Supermarket in the mornings on weekdays.

METRO also began servicing the Roo Express in a strengthened partnership with The University of Akron on July 31. UA students, faculty, and staff members can continue to ride free with their Zip Card.

Both the Grocery Bus and the Roo Express are available to the general public at regular METRO Direct fares and operate Monday through Friday.

Riders can also save money on their fare by purchasing through the EZfare app. EZfare is enabled with fare capping; a service transit agencies offer to their ridership base to help them save money at the fare box. If each ride is $1.25 and a rider typically buys a single fare 20 times per week, they may have previously spent $25.00 on bus fare. Fare capping automatically upgrades their tickets to a 7-day pass, making sure they never surpass the $15.00 cost of a 7-day bus pass. This is also applicable to working towards the 31-day pass, as well, never spending more than $50 a month for a monthly pass. Passengers without a smartphone can purchase a reloadable card at 631 S. Broadway St in lieu of using the EZfare app.

For more information regarding new service updates and changes, call 330-762-0341.

Brown, Sykes Announce More Than $42 Million to Improve Public Transit in Northeast Ohio

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (D-OH-13) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded two Buses and Bus Facilities Grants totaling $42,121,665 to two transit authorities in Northeast Ohio. This investment will allow communities to upgrade existing bus and operations facilities. This investment was made possible through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is getting resources to Ohio communities to improve transportation and support Ohio workers. We fought to secure this investment to create jobs and to connect people with jobs – saving them time and money,” said Senator Brown. “I’m working to make sure Ohio gets its fair share – or more – of infrastructure investment, so Ohio communities can improve transit options and create opportunity.”

“METRO Regional Transit exemplifies excellence in their commitment to enhancing the mobility and quality of life for Ohioans in the 13th Congressional District. Their unwavering efforts to improve transportation accessibility, promote sustainable solutions, and foster economic growth have made a lasting impact in Summit County,” said Rep. Sykes. “The Federal Transit Administration's recognition and support of this outstanding organization will play a pivotal role in empowering METRO Regional Transit to continue their mission of serving Ohio's 13th Congressional District with distinction.”

“Securing this funding from the FTA was a direct result of the unwavering support of Senator Brown and his staff as well as the dedicated effort from the team here at METRO. The Maintenance and Operations Facility will be a key component to ensuring we can further our mission and continue to offer fair and equitable transportation solutions to the community we serve 365 days a year. Our current facility was built in the ‘80s before we were a countywide system and had fewer than 100 buses. We now have over 230 buses, and as we continue to grow, this facility will enable us to serve the region for years to come. This funding represents a landmark investment in keeping our community thriving, and that is a legacy we can all be proud of,” said Dawn Distler Chief Executive Officer, Akron Metropolitan Regional Transit Authority (METRO) RTA.

“This Buses and Bus Facilities grant award will provide funding for the replacement of one of our bus barns that hasn’t been updated since the 1970’s and when the update is complete the new bus barn will be ready for the future with the ability to charge battery electric buses and make our operation more efficient,” said Dean Harris, Executive Director of the Western Reserve Transit Authority.

    Funding from the FTA includes:

    • $37,808,113 to the Akron Metropolitan Regional Transit Authority for the construction of a new maintenance and operations facility on Metro RTA’s existing campus.
    • $4,313,552 to the Western Reserve Transit Authority to reconstruct and improve WRTA’s bus barn, the agency’s primary facility for bus maintenance and operations.

Brown – who serves as the chairman of the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, which oversees DOT’s Federal Transit Administration – has championed federal investment to support Ohio’s local transit authorities.

METRO would like to thank the offices of Senator Sherrod Brown, Representative Emilia Sykes, and Senator JD Vance for their letters of support to the FTA, as well as the continued support from the communities and organizations that we serve.

METRO RTA Board of Trustees Approve Reimagined Network, Allowing June 4 Roll-Out of System Redesign On Tuesday, March 28, the Reimagined Network was unanimously approved by METRO’s Board of Trustees with implementation set for June 4, 2023. The Reimagined Network was designed to provide frequent and convenient service in high ridership corridors and markets where and for whom transit is essential.

The major changes will offer a more streamlined service with five new high frequency corridors, three new 30-minute routes added to the already existing five, expanded weekend service, and offer regional connections to Kent, Brimfield, and Cuyahoga County.

“When METRO conducts a major service change, it is required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to conduct an evaluation to ensure that the planned changes will not disparately impact minority populations and/or disproportionately burden low-income populations,” said Valerie Shea, Director of Planning and Strategic Development. “METRO has completed its analysis, available in full on yourmetrobus.org, and has found there will be great benefit to the community, with a 53% increase in job access for the median Summit County resident living near transit. This number increases to 104% for low-income residents and to 89% for People of Color.”

METRO conducted three extensive rounds of public outreach from 2021-2023. Changes were made to the Reimagined Network prior to Board approval on March 28 based on public input received. Innovative mobility solutions are being considered where METRO’s traditional service options do not meet the needs.

“METRO team members have worked diligently on this project to improve public transit across our region,” said Robert DeJournett, METRO Board Present. “Board members were updated monthly and were provided with an in-depth analysis to review before casting the March 28 vote. Outside of focus groups, informational tables, and targeted public outreach, METRO has also worked with stakeholders and appointing authorities to ensure this plan will provide fair and equitable transportation for our community.”

METRO RTA to Host Hiring Open House, “Come Drive with (B)us: The Sequel” METRO RTA is hosting a 12-hour open house hiring event where potential applicants are invited to test-drive a bus on Wednesday, February 22 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event’s objective, in conjunction with a similar hiring strategy used in August 2022, is to showcase bus operator positions and the benefits of working at METRO by providing applicants the opportunity to test-drive one of the buses used daily on METRO routes. Applicants should expect the process to take approximately one hour.

“The success we had in August with the first Come Drive with (B)us event was astonishing,” said METRO CEO Dawn Distler. “We want to continue to show the public that METRO is not only a viable career, but a very sustainable and advantageous career at that. Our first hiring event brought us the largest training class in METRO history, and those team members are out on the roads in our community today.”

Attendees must bring a valid Ohio driver’s license and three references. Attendees will visit different stations where they will learn about working at METRO as a bus operator. They will have their license verified, fill out an application, go through a short interview, and learn how to secure a mobility device. All attendees that complete these steps will have the opportunity to test-drive a bus.

The event will take place at METRO’s Administrative Office location, 416 Kenmore Blvd., Akron, Ohio 44301. Candidates must be at least 18 years old with no more than two points on their license to apply.

"We provide competitive compensation and an incredibly generous benefits package, including participation in Ohio’s state retirement system,” added Distler. “Many of our operators begin their careers with METRO and retire with METRO, because it truly is a great place to work."

Input Needed on METRO's Reimagined Network

Since 2021, METRO has been working on a plan to improve its bus network. The Draft Reimagined Network is a service plan for METRO’s fixed-route bus network that seeks to make transit more useful to more people, by expanding access to more destinations and opportunities.

It is designed to provide frequent and convenient service in busy places where many people need to travel to, while continuing to offer lifeline services in places where and for people for whom transit is essential.

In 2021 and 2022, METRO conducted two rounds of outreach with the public and stakeholders on the Reimagined Network, refining the design after each round.  Now, we are preparing to implement the first changes later this year, on June 4th.

Before we can start running any new services, we need to hear from you to finalize the details of the upcoming service change.

You can provide a comment on the entire plan, or on the details of specific changes to routes until March 1, 2023. Click here to take our survey or visit our website for more information on the new network.
